Microsoft Project Free Viewer Options

Microsoft does not provide a standalone free application for viewing MPP files without Project installed.1 The practical browser-based options are a read-only MPP viewer or a separate planning service, depending on whether you need to inspect the original file or move the work into another system.

  • Browser-based read-only viewing: Project Plan 365’s Free Viewer can display MPP files in read-only mode. Its Free Viewer page lists support for files created in Microsoft Project 2010 and later, including Project 2024; free views are limited to Gantt Chart, Resource Sheet, and Task Sheet. Check the Free Viewer page for current version and feature details.
  • Move work into a browser-based plan: Standard Microsoft Planner does not directly open an MPP file. A separate Planner Power App migration route can move a schedule into that experience. This is not an MPP viewer or an import command in ordinary Planner.

Before using either workflow, check whether you need to inspect the original MPP or move the work into a different planning service. Confirm the supported file versions and available features, and review how the plan will be stored.
