Gantt Chart View

The Microsoft Project Gantt Chart combines a task table with horizontal bars laid across a timescale. It lets you read task details and see when the work is scheduled in the same view.1

Each row represents a task, while its bar shows the task’s scheduled position and span on the chart. This makes the Gantt Chart useful for entering a task list and reviewing how the schedule is unfolding. For a high-level picture containing only selected key work, use the Timeline view instead.

Project Plan 365 also includes a Gantt Chart view for displaying task details, schedule bars, and dependency links; its Gantt Chart guide provides product-specific instructions.

In desktop Project, choose View > Task Views > Gantt Chart. To change the time granularity displayed above the bars, choose View > Zoom > Timescale, then select the units and tiers that make the schedule readable. Project supports up to three timescale tiers; changing them changes the chart’s display scale, not the task’s scheduled dates or duration.2

You can format Gantt bars to distinguish task types or emphasize selected information. Formatting is specific to the Gantt Chart view you edit, so changing one Gantt Chart view does not automatically change the appearance of another.3

When the relationship between tasks is more important than their position on a calendar, the Network Diagram view presents tasks as connected nodes instead.
