Microsoft Project Alternatives for Mac Users

Microsoft Project desktop is a Windows application, so Mac users who want to continue working with MPP schedules need another workflow.1 Project Plan 365 is the main MPP-focused alternative in this guide; Planner in a browser is a separate option for managing work as a Planner plan.

Project Plan 365 for Mac is designed to look and work as much like Microsoft Project as possible, with familiar views such as Gantt Chart, Network Diagram, Resource Sheet, Timeline, and Team Planner. It opens, edits, and saves native MPP files without conversion, and its Mac product page describes full MPP compatibility. For the specific Project versions it lists as supported, see Microsoft Project for Mac: File Compatibility and Exchange.

The Mac app runs on current and recent macOS releases, including Monterey, Ventura, Sonoma, Sequoia, and Tahoe, and is optimized for Apple Silicon. Project Plan 365 also offers companion iOS apps for iPhone and iPad, where users can open and update schedules and create or modify Gantt charts. The product page has the latest operating-system and device details.

If you prefer Microsoft’s browser-based planning experience, Planner supports basic and premium plans on the web. Standard Planner does not directly import desktop MPP files. Microsoft provides a separate Planner Power App migration route for importing an MPP file; this is not a built-in import feature in ordinary Planner.2
