Timeline View

The Microsoft Project Timeline is a compact, high-level view of selected tasks and milestones. It is useful for communicating key dates and progress without showing the full task list and detailed schedule found in the Gantt Chart view.

In desktop Project, open it with View > Timeline. To include a task or milestone, right-click its task row and choose Add to Timeline. This adds the item to the display; it does not change the task’s schedule or create a dependency. Add only the items that help tell the project’s story rather than reproducing every row in a large plan.1

Project can display more than one timeline bar. You can rearrange items, move them between rows or timeline bars, and use callouts or text and color formatting to make the snapshot easier to read. These presentation options help distinguish key work without requiring every task to appear on the timeline.1

The Timeline can be copied into Office documents, printed, or emailed when you need a concise schedule update for others. Keep the full Project plan available when readers need task-level details or dependencies.1
