Microsoft Project editions and versions
Microsoft Project editions describe capability choices, while version names identify releases or subscription servicing. Both affect available features and support; the broader product distinctions are summarized in Microsoft Project product family.
Standard versus Professional
Section titled “Standard versus Professional”Project Standard is the standalone desktop edition for core planning and scheduling. Project Professional includes the desktop scheduling capabilities and may add enterprise connections, resource-pool features, and related management capabilities. The exact capabilities depend on the release and licensing context, so check the specifications for the target release.1
Professional is therefore not a synonym for “newer.” It is an edition choice. A newer Standard release can still lack capabilities associated with Professional or with an enterprise service.
Subscription versus perpetual
Section titled “Subscription versus perpetual”Perpetual editions are named releases purchased as a one-time license, such as Project 2019, Project 2021, or Project 2024. A subscription desktop edition can receive ongoing updates while the subscription is active, but the exact features and update timing depend on the subscription channel and Microsoft’s servicing policy. A feature claim should therefore include its release and servicing context.
The Project Online Desktop Client is a separately installed subscription desktop client, not another name for the Project Online hosted service and not a perpetual release. Project Online retired on September 30, 2026, so connecting the client to that hosted service is not a current workflow. See installing Microsoft Project for desktop installation context.2
Version support
Section titled “Version support”Project 2019, 2021, and 2024 are distinct perpetual release families. Project 2019 is already out of support. Project 2021 reaches its retirement date on October 14, 2026, while Project 2024 remains supported until October 9, 2029. The year in a product name does not by itself show whether a release is supported; check the lifecycle page for the specific release.534
