AI-Assisted Project Planning: Capabilities and Limits

AI-assisted project planning uses conversational or generative tools to turn a project goal or source material into a proposed work breakdown, task sequence, and planning details such as durations, dependencies, and milestones.

Microsoft Project desktop does not include its own AI-assisted project-planning feature. Separate tools such as Project Plan 365’s Erix AI and Planner Agent can help prepare a project plan.

Project Plan 365’s Erix AI can create a project structure from a description, with possible phases, tasks, durations, dependencies, and milestones. Its Create Project with Erix AI article describes that product-specific workflow. Erix can also answer project questions, but chat is not a substitute for editing an already-saved plan through the application’s project controls.

Planner Agent has an in-plan experience and a separate chat experience. Chat is available with both basic and Premium plans, while generating tasks from a goal and relevant files within a plan requires a Premium plan. Interacting with Planner Agent requires a Microsoft Copilot license. The Agent can also answer questions and edit selected plan or task details; generated work is presented for review before it is applied.1

AI can help organize work; the scheduling application still needs reliable inputs. Microsoft Project calculates dates from schedule details such as durations, task links, calendars, constraints, and resource information. A list that looks orderly may still have missing work, unrealistic estimates, unavailable resources, or date conflicts.2

Before adopting a generated plan, compare it with the approved brief: check that the scope is complete, assumptions are explicit, the sequence makes sense, estimates use the right units, and calendars and assignments reflect actual availability. Then review the calculated dates in the scheduling tool. For a more detailed review process, see AI-Generated Project Schedules: Verification Checklist.

Use an assistant to prepare or refine a draft when the goal, source material, and expected output are clear. Check the product’s current access requirements and supported actions before relying on a particular feature; AI planning features and licensing can change. Keep a human owner responsible for approving the scope, estimates, dependencies, and final schedule.
