What is the difference between task types and task constraints?
Question Link
Answer
If you want to impose restrictions on the way the application calculates the start and finish dates, task constraints do the job rather than task types.
Why am I not able to change the task type of a summary task?
Question Link
Answer
Summary tasks are always fixed-duration types because a summary task's start and finish dates are determined by its subtasks.
How can I make all tasks manually in my new project?
Question Link
Answer
To make tasks scheduled manually click on File - Options - Schedule - New tasks created - Manually scheduled.
Can tasks be anything else but manually or automatically scheduled?
Question Link
Answer
Tasks can only be manually scheduled or automatically scheduled. Remember that manually scheduled tasks are not calculated by Planner.
When should I use manual tasks?
Question Link
Answer
Manual tasks should be used when you want to explicitly set a task's start and finish dates and not allow it to be changed automatically by the scheduler.
How to change a task from manual to auto?
Question Link
Answer
Double click on the task and go to Task Information, then check in the Schedule Mode the Auto Scheduled option.
Why do some of my tasks have the finish and start dates blank?
Question Link
Answer
Go to Format menu and click on Insert Column. Select in the Field Name - Task Mode. If you already have the task mode column skip the previous step. If the Task mode is manual change it to Auto. When tasks are Automatically scheduled, the Planner calculates the Start, Finish and Duration values.
Why is my manual task set to Fixed Duration?
Question Link
Answer
The task type for manual tasks is set to Fixed Duration to make them unchangeable for the Planner.
How to change the bar color for manual tasks?
Question Link
Answer

When should I create a recurring task?
Question Link
Answer
Recurring tasks should be created when a task repeats at set intervals. If it does not repeat at set intervals, enter it as a regular task every time it occurs.
How can I move a task? It keeps the start date and duration as priority, rather then logic links I am giving with predecessors.
Question Link
Answer
If a task has any actuals applied, such as an actual start date or a percentage of work completed, the task can't be rescheduled any earlier than the date when the task actually began. If no progress is entered and the task has an inflexible constraint, the constraint can take precedence over task dependencies. Please remove % complete values then try again to change predecessors value.
What role do Constraints have?
Question Link
Answer
Constraints allow you to control the start or finish date of an automatically-scheduled task.
How does the flexible constraints affect tasks?
Question Link
Answer
Setting flexible constraints allows you to start tasks as early as possible or as late as possible, with the task ending before the project finish, given other constraints and task dependencies in the schedule.
When should I use semi-flexible constraints?
Question Link
Answer
You can use the semi-flexible constraints when you want allow a task to finish at any time, as long as it meets the start or finish deadline.
When should I use inflexible constraints ?
Question Link
Answer
Inflexible constraints are useful when you need to make your schedule take into account external factors, such as deadlines, resources, start and finish dates.
How do I make my project as flexible as possible ?
Question Link
Answer
Tasks are set by default with the "As Soon As Possible" constraint. This gives the scheduling engine the most flexibility in determining the ideal finish date for your project.
Where do I see the constraint type of a task?
Question Link
Answer
To see what constraint a task has select the given task and click on Task - Task Information - Advanced. Constraint information is in the Constraint type and Constraint date boxes.
What does ALAP mean?
Question Link
Answer
ALAP comes from As Late As Possible and it is a flexible constraint type. ALAP schedules the task as late as possible with the task ending before the project ends and without delaying subsequent tasks. You should not enter a task start or finish date with this constraint.
What does ASAP mean?
Question Link
Answer
ASAP comes from As Soon As Possible and is a flexible constraint type. ASAP schedules the task to begin as soon as possible. This is the default constraint for tasks when you schedule from the project start date. You should not enter a start or finish date with this constraint.
